Lance Parrish Autographed 1991 MooTown Snackers #20 California Angels Card

Add a terrific food-issue oddball to a deep Lance Parrish autograph collection with this 1991 MooTown Snackers #20 California Angels card, personally autographed by the eight-time Major League All-Star, three-time Gold Glove winner, six-time Silver Slugger winner and 1984 World Series champion.

The 1991 MooTown Snackers set is one of those unusual early-1990s releases that makes a comprehensive player collection much more interesting. The set contained just 24 standard-size cards and was sponsored by MooTown Snackers. Individual cards were originally packaged with five-ounce packages of MooTown Snackers cheese snacks, along with an attached mail-in certificate. Collectors could also obtain the complete set through a mail-in offer.

That distribution makes this very different from Parrish's mainstream 1991 Bowman, Donruss, Fleer and Leaf cards. Beckett notes that cards obtained directly from the snack packages could have the attached mail-in tab, while cards from the mail-away complete sets did not. Those tabbed versions are a noteworthy variation for serious oddball collectors.

Parrish is correctly cataloged as #20 in the 24-card checklist, representing the California Angels. He appears between George Brett #19 and Chris Sabo #21.

Despite its small size, the checklist is loaded with stars. It includes Jose Canseco, Kirby Puckett, Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr., Ryne Sandberg, Tony Gwynn, Ozzie Smith, Cal Ripken Jr., Don Mattingly, Robin Yount, George Brett and Craig Biggio, among others.

The card comes from the latter portion of Parrish's California Angels tenure. After an outstanding 1990 season in which he earned his eighth All-Star selection and sixth Silver Slugger Award, Parrish remained California's primary catcher in 1991 and hit 19 home runs with 51 RBI.

For a player collection as extensive as this Parrish run, food issues and regional promotional cards are exactly the type of releases that add depth beyond the standard annual sets. The unusual cheese-snack distribution and compact star-filled checklist give #20 considerably more character than another ordinary 1991 base card.
