Lance Parrish Autographed 1987 Topps Boardwalk and Baseball #19 Detroit Tigers Card
Add a terrific regional oddball issue to a Lance Parrish collection with this 1987 Topps Boardwalk and Baseball #19 card featuring him with the Detroit Tigers, personally autographed by the eight-time Major League All-Star and 1984 World Series champion.
The 1987 Boardwalk and Baseball set has a great story behind it. Topps produced the 33-card, standard-size set specifically for distribution through the Boardwalk and Baseball theme park in Haines City, Florida. The cards originally came packaged as a complete set in a custom blue collector's box rather than through Topps' traditional wax-pack distribution.
The set carried the subtitle Top Run Makers and consisted entirely of position playersthere were no pitchers in the 33-card checklist. The colorful design features full-color player photography surrounded by distinctive pink-and-black framing, making the cards immediately recognizable among the numerous specialty Topps releases of the late 1980s.
Parrish is correctly cataloged as card #19, situated between Steve Garvey #18 and Dave Parker #20. The compact checklist is loaded with stars, including Mike Schmidt, Eddie Murray, Dale Murphy, Rickey Henderson, Robin Yount, Andre Dawson, Gary Carter, George Brett, Tim Raines, Ryne Sandberg, Wade Boggs, Don Mattingly and Darryl Strawberry.
There's also a neat variation that makes this issue more interesting for serious player collectors. Two versions of Parrish #19 exist. The error version, cataloged as #19a, is missing the slash between the two B's in the Boardwalk/Baseball notation, while the corrected #19b has the slash present. This variation occurs throughout much of the set.
The card still features Parrish with the Detroit Tigers, even though he had joined the Philadelphia Phillies for the 1987 season. Parrish was coming off an injury-shortened but productive 1986 campaign in which he hit 22 home runs with 62 RBI in only 91 games, earning both an American League All-Star selection and a Silver Slugger Award.
His original Detroit tenure was highlighted by the 1984 World Series championship, and Parrish ultimately completed his 19-year Major League career with 324 home runs and 1,070 RBI, along with eight All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves and six Silver Slugger Awards.
