Add an interesting transitional-year issue of one of the premier catchers of the 1980s with this 1987 Donruss #91 Lance Parrish card featuring him with the Detroit Tigers, personally autographed by the eight-time All-Star and 1984 World Series champion.
The 1987 Donruss #91 is especially interesting because the card still depicts Parrish as a Detroit Tiger, even though his long original tenure with the organization had ended by the time the 1987 season began. After playing for Detroit from 1977 through 1986, Parrish left as a free agent and joined the Philadelphia Phillies for 1987.
That makes the #91 one of Parrish's final mainstream issues showing him with Detroit before his cards transitioned to Philadelphia. For a comprehensive player collection, cards from this period provide a nice bridge between two distinct portions of his career.
Parrish was coming off an injury-shortened but highly productive 1986 season. Limited to only 91 games, he still batted .257 with 22 home runs and 62 RBI, while posting a .340 on-base percentage, .483 slugging percentage and .824 OPS. His 122 OPS+ was one of the strongest offensive marks of his career.
Despite the missed time, Parrish was selected to the 1986 American League All-Star team and earned a Silver Slugger Award. It marked his fifth consecutive All-Star selection from 1982 through 1986 and reinforced his reputation as one of baseball's most dangerous offensive catchers.
His original Detroit tenure included the defining accomplishment of his career: the 1984 World Series championship. Parrish hit 33 home runs with 98 RBI during that championship season and was an important middle-of-the-order presence on one of the greatest Tigers teams in franchise history.
Parrish ultimately played 19 Major League seasons and earned eight All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves and six Silver Slugger Awards. His combination of power and defense made him one of the defining catchers of his era.
