Parrish entered 1983 coming off one of his strongest seasons. In 1982, he batted .284 with 138 hits, 32 home runs and 87 RBI, producing a .529 slugging percentage and .867 OPS. That performance earned him American League All-Star and Silver Slugger honors and a 13th-place finish in AL MVP voting.

The 1983 season became another major step in Parrish's development into one of baseball's elite two-way catchers. He appeared in 155 games and batted .269 with 163 hits, a career-high 42 doubles, 27 home runs and a career-high 114 RBI. His 114 RBI were the most by any Major League catcher that season.

Parrish's combination of offense and defense earned him an impressive collection of honors in 1983. He was selected to the American League All-Star team, won his first Gold Glove Award, captured another Silver Slugger Award, and finished ninth in AL MVP voting.
