The card was issued at an important point in Parrish's career, immediately following his breakout 1980 season. At age 24, Parrish appeared in 144 games and batted a career-high .286 with 158 hits, 34 doubles, six triples, 24 home runs and 82 RBI. His .499 slugging percentage and .825 OPS demonstrated the offensive production that would soon make him one of baseball's most feared catchers.

That performance earned Parrish his first American League All-Star selection and first Silver Slugger Award in 1980. It began a remarkable run that would eventually include eight All-Star selections and six Silver Slugger Awards.

During the strike-shortened 1981 season, Parrish remained Detroit's primary catcher, appearing in 96 games and collecting 85 hits, 18 doubles, 10 home runs and 46 RBI. He handled 90 games behind the plate while continuing to establish himself as an important part of Detroit's young core.

Parrish's Detroit career would eventually culminate with the unforgettable 1984 World Series championship team. That season he led the Tigers with 33 home runs and 98 RBI, started for the American League in the All-Star Game, won both the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards, and homered during Detroit's World Series victory over San Diego.
