Batista reached the Major Leagues with Oakland during the 1996 season after beginning the year with Triple-A Edmonton. He recorded his first Major League hit on June 8 and his first home run on June 18 before establishing himself in the Athletics lineup. Batista started Oaklands final 33 games of the season, batting an impressive .317 with four home runs and 21 RBI during that stretch and earning recognition on the Topps Rookie All-Star team.

Batista developed into one of baseballs more productive power-hitting infielders, eventually becoming a two-time All-Star and producing six seasons with at least 25 home runs. His biggest power season came in 2000 with Toronto, when he blasted a career-high 41 home runs. He later enjoyed productive seasons with Baltimore and Montreal and finished his Major League career with 221 home runs and 718 RBI.
