Batista made his Major League debut with Oakland in June 1996 after beginning the season at Triple-A Edmonton. He quickly worked his way into a regular role and started the Athletics final 33 games, batting .317 with four home runs and 21 RBI during that stretch while playing errorless defense. His strong performance earned him selection as the second baseman on the Topps Rookie All-Star team.

Overall, Batista finished his rookie campaign batting .298 with 71 hits, six home runs, 25 RBI and seven stolen bases in 74 games, finishing seventh in American League Rookie of the Year voting.

Batista went on to become a two-time MLB All-Star and established himself as one of baseballs notable power-hitting infielders. He finished his Major League career with 1,146 hits, 221 home runs and 718 RBI, highlighted by a career-high 41 home runs with Toronto in 2000.
