Batista made his Major League debut in June 1996 and quickly established himself as a versatile member of the Athletics infield. He finished his rookie campaign batting .298 with 71 hits, six home runs, 25 RBI and seven stolen bases in 74 games. Primarily used at second base, Batista also saw action at third base and shortstop. His performance earned him a seventh-place finish in American League Rookie of the Year voting.

Batista was especially impressive down the stretch, starting Oaklands final 33 games and batting .317 with four home runs and 21 RBI during that span. His strong finish earned him selection as the second baseman on the Topps Rookie All-Star team.
