His versatility was also evident defensively, with most of his playing time coming at second base while also seeing action at third base and shortstop.

Batista was particularly impressive late in the season. He started Oaklands final 33 games and batted .317 with four home runs and 21 RBI during that stretch while playing errorless defense. His performance earned him recognition as the second baseman on the Topps Rookie All-Star team, and he finished seventh in American League Rookie of the Year voting.

Batista developed into one of baseballs notable power-hitting infielders, earning two MLB All-Star selections and finishing his Major League career with 1,146 hits, 221 home runs and 718 RBI. His career included a 41-home run season with Toronto in 2000.
