Add a great first-year Stadium Club issue to a comprehensive Lance Parrish autograph collection with this 1991 Stadium Club #166 California Angels card, personally autographed by the eight-time Major League All-Star, three-time Gold Glove winner, six-time Silver Slugger winner and 1984 World Series champion.
The 1991 Stadium Club set was Topps' entry into the premium-card market, and its photography-driven presentation made it dramatically different from the company's traditional bordered flagship cards. The design emphasized large, full-color player photography and a more upscale appearance, making Stadium Club one of the defining new products of the early 1990s.
That makes Parrish's #166 particularly worthwhile in a deep signed run. It is his first Stadium Club card and provides a completely different presentation from his 1991 Topps, Bowman, Donruss, Fleer, Leaf and oddball issues.
The card represents Parrish during his third full season with the California Angels. He entered 1991 immediately following an outstanding 1990 campaign in which he hit .268 with 24 home runs and 70 RBI and earned both American League All-Star and Silver Slugger honors.
At age 35, Parrish remained California's primary catcher in 1991, appearing in 119 games and collecting 87 hits, 12 doubles, 19 home runs and 51 RBI. His 19 home runs ranked third on the Angels behind Dave Winfield and Wally Joyner.
Parrish also continued to shoulder an impressive workload behind the plate. He caught 111 games, started 102 and logged 912 innings, committing only two errors in 717 total chances for an excellent .997 fielding percentage.
His 19 home runs in 1991 pushed Parrish's career total to 287, continuing a career that would ultimately produce 324 homers. His combination of longevity and power helped establish him as one of the most accomplished offensive catchers of his generation.
For the Parrish run we've been building, this is one I'd consider a little more interesting than an ordinary 1991 base issue. Being Parrish's inaugural Stadium Club card gives it a legitimate hobby distinction, particularly when signed, because Stadium Club's photo-focused design tends to display autographs especially well.
