Add an important early-career card of one of the premier catchers of the 1980s with this 1980 Topps #196 Lance Parrish card featuring him with the Detroit Tigers, personally autographed by the future eight-time Major League All-Star.
The 1980 Topps #196 is Parrish's third Topps appearance, following his 1978 Topps #708 Rookie Catchers rookie card and his first solo card, the 1979 Topps #469. This makes the 1980 issue an attractive early card from just before Parrish emerged as one of the American League's elite catchers.
Parrish entered 1980 having already established himself as Detroit's primary catcher. In 1979, at only 23 years old, he appeared in 143 games and batted .276 with 136 hits, 26 doubles, 19 home runs and 65 RBI.
The season in which this card was issued became Parrish's true breakthrough into stardom. In 1980, he batted .286 with 158 hits, 34 doubles, six triples, 24 home runs and 82 RBI in 144 games. His .499 slugging percentage helped him produce a strong .825 OPS while handling the demanding catching position.
That performance earned Parrish his first American League All-Star selection and the first Silver Slugger Award of his career. It was the beginning of a long run of recognition that would establish him as one of baseball's defining catchers of the era.
Parrish eventually became an integral member of the 1984 World Series Champion Detroit Tigers and finished his 19-year Major League career with 324 home runs, 1,070 RBI and 1,782 hits.
