Add an important early-career card of one of the premier catchers of his generation with this 1979 Topps #469 Lance Parrish card featuring him with the Detroit Tigers, personally autographed by the eight-time Major League All-Star.
The 1979 Topps #469 is Parrish's first solo Topps card, following his appearance on the 1978 Topps #708 Rookie Catchers multi-player rookie card. That makes this an especially attractive early issue for Parrish collectors, showing the young catcher just as he was beginning to establish himself as Detroit's long-term answer behind the plate.
Parrish had reached the Major Leagues with Detroit in 1977 before receiving a much larger opportunity during the 1978 season. At just 22 years old, he appeared in 85 games, hitting 14 home runs with 41 RBI, 11 doubles and three triples in 288 at-bats. Even at that early stage, the power that would eventually make him one of baseball's most dangerous offensive catchers was already evident.
The season in which this card was issued proved to be Parrish's true breakout. In 1979, he took over as Detroit's primary catcher and appeared in 143 games, batting .276 with 136 hits, 26 doubles, 19 home runs and 65 RBI. His .800 OPS and 4.0 WAR helped establish the 23-year-old as an important piece of an emerging Tigers core.
Parrish would become one of the central figures in Detroit's rise during the 1980s, ultimately joining Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Jack Morris and Kirk Gibson as key members of the 1984 World Series championship club. His career rsum eventually included 324 home runs, 1,070 RBI, three Gold Gloves and six Silver Slugger Awards.
For a comprehensive Parrish autograph collection, the 1979 Topps #469 is a particularly appealing piece because of its early-career status and distinction as his first individual Topps card.
