The 1992 Bowman #328 Chris Hammond features the left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds during the early stages of his Major League career. Personally autographed by Hammond, the card comes from the highly regarded 1992 Bowman release, a set that became particularly popular with collectors for its prospect-heavy checklist and lower production compared with many other baseball products of the era.

The 1992 Bowman set represented an important evolution for the brand. Bowman placed a strong emphasis on young players, prospects and emerging Major Leaguers, helping establish the prospect-oriented identity that would become synonymous with Bowman in later years. The set is particularly well known for early cards of players such as Mariano Rivera, Mike Piazza, Trevor Hoffman and Manny Ramirez.

Hammond was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft after pitching at the University of Alabama. He worked his way through Cincinnati's farm system before making his Major League debut on July 16, 1990.

By the time this 1992 Bowman card was issued, Hammond was still working to establish himself at the Major League level. His Cincinnati tenure provided the foundation for a career that would soon take him to the expansion Florida Marlins, where he received an opportunity to become a full-time starting pitcher.

Hammond became a regular member of the Florida Marlins rotation in 1993, the franchise's inaugural season. He made 32 starts and finished 15-12, leading the expansion club in victories and establishing what would remain his career high.

His career later took an extraordinary turn. After spending three seasons away from Major League Baseball, Hammond returned with the Atlanta Braves in 2002 at age 36 and reinvented himself as a highly effective relief pitcher. He went 7-2 with a remarkable 0.95 ERA in 63 appearances, surrendering only seven earned runs in 76 innings.

That comeback extended Hammond's career through 2006. He ultimately pitched in parts of 14 Major League seasons, appearing for the Reds, Marlins, Red Sox, Braves, Yankees, Athletics and Padres.
