The 1992 Fleer #408 Chris Hammond features the left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds during the early portion of his Major League career. Personally autographed by Hammond, the card is a classic early-1990s Fleer issue representing his final season in the Cincinnati organization before the next chapter of his career with the Florida Marlins.

Hammond was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft following his collegiate career at the University of Alabama. He progressed through Cincinnati's minor league system before making his Major League debut on July 16, 1990.

Hammond's first Major League opportunity came during a historic season for the Reds. He made seven starts for Cincinnati in 1990 as the club went wire-to-wire in first place before sweeping the Oakland Athletics in the World Series.

The 1992 season marked the end of Hammond's time in the Cincinnati organization. Following the season, he was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 1992 MLB Expansion Draft, giving him an opportunity to become a regular member of the starting rotation for the new franchise.

That opportunity produced one of Hammond's best seasons as a starter. During the Marlins' inaugural 1993 campaign, he made 32 starts and finished 15-12, leading Florida in victories. He also threw three shutouts, demonstrating the ability that had made him a promising young pitcher in Cincinnati's system.

Hammond's career later took a remarkable turn. After spending three seasons away from the Major Leagues, he returned with the Atlanta Braves in 2002 at age 36 and reinvented himself as an outstanding relief pitcher. He went 7-2 with a 0.95 ERA in 63 appearances, allowing only seven earned runs in 76 innings.

Hammond continued pitching through 2006 and ultimately appeared in parts of 14 Major League seasons, playing for the Reds, Marlins, Red Sox, Braves, Yankees, Athletics and Padres.
