The 1992 Donruss #172 Chris Hammond features the left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds during the early portion of his Major League career. Personally autographed by Hammond, the card comes from a Donruss release that introduced a noticeably cleaner and more modern design than many of the company's late-1980s and early-1990s sets.
Hammond was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft following his collegiate career at the University of Alabama. He advanced through Cincinnati's farm system before making his Major League debut on July 16, 1990.
His first Major League opportunity came during a memorable season in Cincinnati. Hammond made seven starts for the Reds in 1990 as the club went wire-to-wire in first place and ultimately swept the Oakland Athletics to capture the World Series championship.
By 1992, Hammond was still working to establish himself as a Major League starting pitcher. His opportunity would expand considerably after joining the Florida Marlins, where he became an important member of the rotation during the expansion franchise's inaugural season.
In 1993, Hammond made 32 starts for Florida and finished 15-12, leading the first-year Marlins in victories and establishing a career high in wins. He remained primarily a starter during the first half of his Major League career before later finding tremendous success in a relief role.
After three seasons away from the Major Leagues, Hammond returned with the Atlanta Braves in 2002 at age 36. His comeback season was exceptional, as he went 7-2 with a 0.95 ERA in 63 relief appearances, surrendering only seven earned runs over 76 innings.
Hammond continued pitching through 2006 and ultimately appeared in parts of 14 Major League seasons for seven organizations, making his early Cincinnati cards an appealing record of where his lengthy career began.
