The 1991 Bowman #680 Chris Hammond features the young left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds early in his Major League career. Personally autographed by Hammond, this Bowman issue follows his 1990 Major League debut and represents a pitcher who would eventually build a lengthy career as both a starter and reliever.

Hammond was selected by Cincinnati in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft following his collegiate career at the University of Alabama. He progressed through the Reds' minor league system before reaching the Major Leagues during the 1990 season.

Hammond made his Major League debut on July 16, 1990, and made seven starts for Cincinnati during his first season. His arrival came during the Reds' memorable championship campaign, when Cincinnati went wire-to-wire in first place before sweeping the Oakland Athletics in the 1990 World Series.

The 1991 Bowman #680 comes from a brand that had increasingly emphasized young players and prospects following Bowman's return to baseball cards in 1989. Hammond was still at the beginning of his Major League career when this card was produced, giving it added appeal as an early Bowman issue.

Hammond eventually became a regular starting pitcher with the Florida Marlins. In 1993, the franchise's inaugural season, he made 32 starts and went 15-12, establishing a career high in victories.

His career later featured a remarkable reinvention. After spending the 1999 through 2001 seasons away from the Major Leagues, Hammond returned with the Atlanta Braves in 2002 at age 36 and became one of baseball's most effective relief pitchers. He finished the season 7-2 with a 0.95 ERA in 63 appearances, allowing only seven earned runs over 76 innings.

That extraordinary comeback extended Hammond's Major League career through 2006. He ultimately pitched in parts of 14 Major League seasons, appearing for the Reds, Marlins, Red Sox, Braves, Yankees, Athletics and Padres.
