Add a terrific transitional card from the end of Bill Lees memorable Boston tenure with this 1979 Topps #455 card featuring the popular left-hander with the Boston Red Sox, personally autographed by the pitcher famously known as Spaceman. The 1979 Topps set features one of the decades classic designs, with white borders, colorful team-name banners and a small baseball containing the player's position. Lees #455 is particularly interesting because, although the card depicts him with Boston, his lengthy Red Sox career had just come to an end.

Lee spent 10 seasons with the Red Sox from 1969 through 1978, developing from a reliever into an accomplished starter. He earned an American League All-Star selection in 1973 and then won exactly 17 games in three consecutive seasons from 1973 through 1975.

His final Boston season came in 1978, when Lee went 10-10 with a 3.46 ERA in 28 appearances and 24 starts. He completed eight games, threw one shutout and worked 177 innings.

On December 7, 1978, the Red Sox traded Lee to the Montreal Expos for infielder Stan Papi. Because Topps still pictured him with Boston, the 1979 #455 serves as an excellent transitional issue and the final regular Topps card depicting Lee as a Red Sox player.

Lee immediately enjoyed a tremendous first season in Montreal, going 16-10 with a 3.04 ERA, six complete games and three shutouts over 222 innings in 1979. His 1980 Topps #97 would become his first regular Topps card picturing him in an Expos uniform, making the two cards a natural pairing within an autographed Bill Lee collection.
