Bill Lee Autographed 1972 Topps #636 Boston Red Sox Card

The 1972 Topps set is one of the most distinctive releases of the decade, remembered for its bold, colorful psychedelic-style team lettering and bright borders. At card #636, Lee appears deep in the 787-card checklist, placing his card among the desirable high-number portion of the set. High-number 1972 Topps cards were distributed in smaller quantities than earlier series and have long been more challenging for collectors.

This is also an excellent early card of Lee, issued just two years after his 1970 Topps rookie card and immediately following his breakout 1971 campaign. Lee appeared in 47 games for Boston in 1971, going 9-2 with a 2.74 ERA in 102 innings.

Lee continued to be an important part of Boston's bullpen in 1972, appearing in another 47 games. Working exclusively in relief, he finished 7-4 with a 3.20 ERA, five saves and 84 innings pitched. He also finished 16 games for a Red Sox club that went 85-70 and narrowly finished second in the American League East.

The following season brought a dramatic change in Lee's career. Boston moved him into the starting rotation in 1973, and he responded with a 17-11 record, 2.75 ERA, 18 complete games and an American League All-Star selection. He would win exactly 17 games in three consecutive seasons from 1973 through 1975.

That combination of an early-career Bill Lee card, memorable 1972 Topps design and high-number status makes #636 a particularly attractive vintage issue to have autographed.
