Bill Lee Autographed 1979 Topps #455 Boston Red Sox Card

Add a terrific vintage card from the conclusion of Bill Lees memorable Boston Red Sox tenure with this 1979 Topps #455 card, personally autographed by the colorful left-hander famously known as Spaceman.

Although Lee would pitch for the Montreal Expos during the 1979 season, his 1979 Topps #455 still features him with the Boston Red Sox, making this one of the final mainstream cards depicting him with the franchise where he established his reputation as both an accomplished pitcher and one of baseball's great personalities.

Lee spent 10 seasons with Boston from 1969 through 1978, compiling a 94-68 record with the Red Sox. He moved from the bullpen into the starting rotation and enjoyed his best stretch from 1973 through 1975, winning exactly 17 games in three consecutive seasons and earning an American League All-Star selection in 1973.

The 1978 season was Lee's last in Boston. He went 10-10 with a 3.46 ERA in 28 appearances, including 24 starts and eight complete games. His relationship with manager Don Zimmer had deteriorated, however, and on December 7, 1978, Boston traded Lee to Montreal in exchange for infielder Stan Papi.

Lee immediately enjoyed a resurgence with Montreal, going 16-10 with a 3.04 ERA over 222 innings in 1979 and earning recognition as The Sporting News National League Left-Hander of the Year. That makes this 1979 Topps card an interesting transitional issuereleased for Lee's first season away from Boston while still picturing him as a member of the Red Sox.
