Lance Parrish Autographed 1993 Topps #609 Seattle Mariners Card

Add a classic Topps flagship issue from Lance Parrish's brief Seattle Mariners chapter with this 1993 Topps #609, personally autographed by the eight-time Major League All-Star, three-time Gold Glove winner, six-time Silver Slugger winner and starting catcher for the 1984 World Series Champion Detroit Tigers.

The 1993 Topps #609 is one of the relatively small number of mainstream cards depicting Parrish as a member of the Seattle Mariners. His stay in Seattle lasted only part of the 1992 season, giving his Mariners cards an interesting place within a comprehensive career-spanning autograph collection.

Parrish began 1992 with the California Angels before moving to Seattle. He appeared in 69 games for the Mariners, collecting 45 hits, 11 doubles, one triple and eight home runs with 21 RBI in 192 at-bats. He batted .234 with a .304 on-base percentage, .427 slugging percentage and .731 OPS.

Those numbers were respectable for the 36-year-old veteran. Parrish produced a 103 OPS+ with Seattle, meaning his offensive production remained slightly above league average despite being well into the latter stages of his career.

Parrish's role had also changed considerably from his prime years in Detroit. Rather than serving exclusively as an everyday catcher, Seattle utilized him at catcher, first base and designated hitter, allowing the Mariners to continue taking advantage of his right-handed power and veteran presence.

The 1993 Topps #609 is also a true transition-era issue. Although the card depicts Parrish with Seattle, his Mariners tenure had ended after 1992. Parrish appeared in 10 Major League games for the Cleveland Indians in 1993, making this Topps card one of the final mainstream releases documenting his short Seattle stop.

Seattle's 1992 roster also included a young Ken Griffey Jr., who hit .308 with 27 home runs and 103 RBI, along with Jay Buhner, Kevin Mitchell and Harold Reynolds. Parrish's brief Mariners stint therefore places the veteran star of the 1980s alongside several of the recognizable names associated with Seattle baseball in the early 1990s.

For the Parrish run, I especially like having the Topps #609 alongside the 1993 Donruss, Fleer, Score, Select and Stadium Club Seattle cards. His Mariners tenure lasted only 69 games, so completing the signed Seattle issues creates a nice miniature team run within the much larger Parrish collection.
