Add a distinctive All-Star issue from Lance Parrish's final season with the Philadelphia Phillies with this 1989 Donruss All-Stars #55, personally autographed by the eight-time Major League All-Star and 1984 World Series champion.
The 1989 Donruss All-Stars set was a special 64-card release built primarily around participants in the 1988 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Parrish is correctly cataloged as #55 with the Philadelphia Phillies, appearing between Bob Knepper #54 and future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux #56.
Parrish earned his place in the set by being selected to the 1988 National League All-Star team while playing for Philadelphia. That selection was particularly significant: it was the eighth and final All-Star appearance of his career and his only selection as a National Leaguer after earning his previous seven with the Detroit Tigers in the American League.
Unlike some earlier Donruss Action All-Stars releases, the 1989 Donruss All-Stars cards are standard baseball-card size. Their design closely resembles the regular 1989 Donruss set, but the All-Star cards can be distinguished by the appropriate league logo on the front.
The cards were issued in their own 35-cent wax packs, with each pack containing five All-Star cards, one Pop-Up insert and one piece of the Warren Spahn puzzle. Donruss also produced a separate 20-card Pop-Ups insert set featuring the starting lineups from the 1988 All-Star Game.
The checklist is loaded with stars of the era. Parrish's National League portion includes Will Clark, Darryl Strawberry, Ryne Sandberg, Andre Dawson, Ozzie Smith, Gary Carter, Barry Larkin, Orel Hershiser, Rafael Palmeiro, Greg Maddux and Chris Sabo, among others.
Parrish's 1988 All-Star season was also his second and final year with Philadelphia. He appeared in 123 games and hit 15 home runs with 60 RBI while remaining the Phillies' primary catcher. He moved on to the California Angels for 1989, which makes this Donruss All-Stars card an interesting carryover issue commemorating the final season of his relatively brief Phillies tenure.
Parrish ultimately completed a 19-year Major League career with 1,782 hits, 324 home runs and 1,070 RBI. His career honors include eight All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves, six Silver Slugger Awards and a key role on the 1984 World Series Champion Detroit Tigers.
