Lance Parrish Autographed 1987 Topps - 1987 All-Star Set Collector's Edition (Glossy Send-Ins) #58 Detroit Tigers Card
Add one of the more interesting mail-away issues from the final chapter of Lance Parrish's original Detroit Tigers tenure with this 1987 Topps All-Star Set Collector's Edition Glossy Send-Ins #58, personally autographed by the eight-time Major League All-Star and 1984 World Series champion.
The 1987 Topps Glossy Send-Ins were a special 60-card mail-away set, completely separate from the 22-card Glossy All-Stars inserted into rack packs. Parrish is correctly cataloged as #58, near the end of the checklist between Kirby Puckett #57 and Jose Canseco #59.
Distribution is one of the features that makes this issue particularly interesting. Collectors could redeem six Spring Fever Baseball cards to receive one 10-card group, with six groups comprising the complete 60-card set. These were therefore mail-order collectibles rather than cards that could simply be pulled from regular packs.
That distinction is important because Parrish actually has two different glossy Topps issues from 1987. His 1987 Topps Glossy All-Stars #20 commemorated the 1986 All-Star Game and was inserted one per rack pack, while this Glossy Send-Ins #58 came from the separate Collector's Edition mail-away program.
The 60-card checklist is loaded with major stars of the era, including Don Mattingly, Tony Gwynn, Roger Clemens, Dale Murphy, Rickey Henderson, Wade Boggs, Mike Schmidt, George Brett, Cal Ripken Jr., Dwight Gooden, Reggie Jackson, Kirby Puckett and Jose Canseco. Parrish's placement at #58 makes him part of an especially strong final group of cards.
The card continued to feature Parrish with the Detroit Tigers, appropriately reflecting the club for which he had just completed the 1986 season. Despite being limited to only 91 games that year, Parrish hit 22 home runs with 62 RBI and earned both an American League All-Star selection and Silver Slugger Award.
The 1986 campaign was Parrish's final season of his original Detroit tenure. He joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1987, making this another interesting transitional issue from the period when card manufacturers were beginning to catch up with his move to Philadelphia.
Parrish's Detroit years were highlighted by the 1984 World Series championship, and he ultimately finished his 19-year Major League career with 324 home runs and 1,070 RBI, earning eight All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves and six Silver Slugger Awards.
