Lance Parrish Autographed 1986 Topps - 1986 All-Star Set Collector's Edition (Glossy Send-Ins) #8 Detroit Tigers Card
Add a distinctive mail-away issue to a Lance Parrish collection with this 1986 Topps All-Star Set Collector's Edition Glossy Send-Ins #8 featuring the star catcher with the Detroit Tigers, personally autographed by the eight-time All-Star and 1984 World Series champion.
The 1986 Topps Glossy Send-Ins are especially appealing for collectors because they were not available through ordinary pack insertion. This was a 60-card, standard-size glossy set, and Parrish is correctly cataloged as card #8, appearing between Keith Hernandez #7 and Willie McGee #9.
Topps distributed the set through a special mail-in promotion. Collectors could redeem six Spring Fever Baseball special-offer cards, along with $1, to receive one of the 10-card groups. The special-offer cards themselves were inserted one per wax pack. This differed from the earlier 1983-85 Glossy Send-In programs and makes it worth accurately identifying the 1986 redemption method.
The cards also have a distinctive appearance. Topps used a white outer border with a green frame surrounding the full-color player photograph, while the backs were printed in red and blue on white card stock. The glossy surface gives the issue a noticeably different presentation from Parrish's regular 1986 Topps #740 card.
The 60-card checklist was heavily focused on established stars. Parrish's first 10-card group alone included Reggie Jackson, Fernando Valenzuela, Rickey Henderson, Keith Hernandez and Willie McGee, while the complete set also featured Cal Ripken Jr., George Brett, Mike Schmidt, Don Mattingly, Eddie Murray, Ryne Sandberg, Dwight Gooden, Nolan Ryan, Ozzie Smith and Tony Gwynn.
Parrish entered 1986 firmly established as one of baseball's premier catchers. He was coming off a 1985 season in which he hit .273 with 28 home runs and 98 RBI, earning another American League All-Star selection and his third consecutive Gold Glove.
Although injuries limited him to 91 games in 1986, Parrish still produced 22 home runs and 62 RBI and earned another All-Star selection and Silver Slugger Award. It was his fifth consecutive All-Star season and the final year of his original Detroit Tigers tenure before joining the Philadelphia Phillies.
His Detroit legacy was already secure as one of the central figures on the 1984 World Series championship team, when Parrish led the Tigers with 33 home runs and 98 RBI and homered in the championship-clinching Game 5 against San Diego.
