Add an important first-year Philadelphia Phillies issue of one of the premier catchers of the 1980s with this 1987 Fleer Update #U-96 Lance Parrish card, personally autographed by the eight-time All-Star and 1984 World Series champion.
The 1987 Fleer Update #U-96 is particularly significant within a comprehensive Parrish collection because it reflects his move from the Detroit Tigers to the Philadelphia Phillies. While Parrish's regular 1987 Fleer #160 still pictures him with Detroit, the Update set gave Fleer an opportunity to show him with his new club. Parrish is correctly cataloged as #U-96 with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Parrish had spent his entire Major League career with Detroit before becoming a free agent following the 1986 season. After establishing himself as one of the game's most accomplished catchers, he moved to Philadelphia for 1987, beginning a two-season tenure with the Phillies.
His arrival gave Philadelphia another established power hitter alongside stars such as Mike Schmidt, Juan Samuel and Von Hayes. Parrish appeared in 130 games during his first Phillies season, collecting 114 hits, 21 doubles, 17 home runs and 67 RBI.
The card therefore makes an excellent companion to Parrish's regular 1987 Fleer issue. Together, the two cards document his career transition within a single Fleer production year: #160 shows the longtime Detroit Tiger, while #U-96 reflects his new chapter in Philadelphia.
Parrish's rsum was already impressive when he arrived in Philadelphia. His Detroit years included five consecutive All-Star selections from 1982 through 1986, three Gold Gloves and multiple Silver Slugger Awards, highlighted by his role on the 1984 World Series Champion Tigers.
Parrish remained with Philadelphia through 1988 and was selected to the National League All-Star team in 1988, giving him All-Star selections in both leagues during his career. He ultimately played 19 Major League seasons, finishing with 324 home runs and 1,070 RBI.
