Add a classic championship-season issue of one of the premier catchers of the 1980s with this 1984 Topps #640 Lance Parrish card featuring him with the Detroit Tigers, personally autographed by the eight-time All-Star and key member of Detroit's 1984 World Series championship club.
The 1984 Topps #640 was issued at the beginning of what would become one of the greatest seasons in Tigers history. Parrish entered the year already firmly established as an elite catcher after a tremendous 1983 season, when he collected 163 hits, a career-high 42 doubles, 27 home runs and a career-high 114 RBI while earning All-Star, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger honors.
Parrish remained a major force in 1984, appearing in 147 games and leading Detroit with 33 home runs and 98 RBI. He again earned an American League All-Star selection, Gold Glove Award and Silver Slugger Award, while finishing 16th in AL MVP voting.
His production helped power a remarkable Tigers club that raced to a 35-5 start and finished the regular season with a 104-58 record before advancing to the World Series. Parrish was one of the central figures on a roster that also included Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Kirk Gibson, Jack Morris and Chet Lemon.
Parrish continued contributing during Detroit's championship run, batting .267 with two home runs and five RBI across eight postseason games. In the 1984 World Series against the San Diego Padres, he started all five games behind the plate and hit .278 with five hits, three runs, a double, a home run and two RBI.
His World Series home run came in the decisive Game 5, adding to Detroit's 8-4 victory that secured the franchise's first championship since 1968. That direct connection to the championship season gives Parrish's 1984 Topps card added appeal for Tigers collectors.
Parrish ultimately completed a 19-year Major League career with 1,782 hits, 324 home runs and 1,070 RBI, earning eight All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves and six Silver Slugger Awards.
