Daniels was selected by Cincinnati in the first round of the 1982 MLB Draft and developed into one of the organizations most highly regarded young hitters. His breakout came in 1987, when Daniels produced one of the strongest offensive seasons of his career. Despite playing only 108 games, he batted .334 with 26 home runs, 64 RBI and 26 stolen bases, while posting a .429 on-base percentage and .617 slugging percentage. His combination of average, power, speed and plate discipline made him one of baseballs most dangerous young hitters.
Daniels continued to produce for Cincinnati before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 1989 season. In 1990, he delivered another impressive campaign, batting .296 with 27 home runs and 94 RBI for Los Angeles. Although injuries ultimately shortened his career, Daniels finished seven Major League seasons with a .285 batting average, .382 on-base percentage, 104 home runs and 87 stolen bases.
