The 1990 Fleer Update set was Fleers end-of-season companion to its regular 1990 release. The 132-card set was distributed exclusively as a boxed set through hobby dealers, with the cards carrying a U prefix to distinguish them from the regular Fleer checklist. The fronts retained the same basic styling as the standard 1990 Fleer set.

Samuel is card #U-25 and is correctly featured with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This makes the card especially useful in a Samuel player run because his regular 1990 Fleer #215 still depicts him with the Philadelphia Phillies, while the Update issue reflects his move to Los Angeles.

Samuel joined the Dodgers for the 1990 season after spending the second half of 1989 with the New York Mets.
