Own an autographed 1989 Bowman Tiffany #405 baseball card personally signed by Juan Samuel, featuring the dynamic second baseman with the Philadelphia Phillies. This premium Tiffany version combines Samuel's autograph with one of the more desirable variations from the landmark 1989 revival of the Bowman brand.
The 1989 Bowman release marked Topps' return of the Bowman baseball card name after it had disappeared following the 1955 set. The cards were produced in an unusual oversized format, measuring approximately 2 x 3 inches and recalling the larger dimensions of vintage Bowman issues.
The Bowman Tiffany version was issued as a premium factory set and produced in substantially smaller quantities than the regular Bowman release. Tiffany cards feature the characteristic high-gloss finish and upgraded card stock associated with Topps' premium factory sets of the era. For player collectors, the Tiffany version provides a much more limited alternative to the standard #405 Bowman card.
Card #405 features Samuel with the Philadelphia Phillies during the final season of his original tenure with the organization. He had established himself as one of baseball's premier power-speed threats after becoming Philadelphia's regular second baseman in 1984, when he batted .272 with 15 home runs, 69 RBIs, 19 triples, and 72 stolen bases. Samuel led the National League in triples, earned his first MLB All-Star selection, and finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting.
Samuel again led the National League in triples in 1985 before producing one of his finest all-around seasons in 1987. He batted .272 with career highs of 28 home runs and 100 RBIs, while adding 15 triples and 35 stolen bases, earning his second All-Star selection.
The 1989 season brought a major change in Samuel's career. In June, Philadelphia traded him to the New York Mets in the memorable deal that brought Lenny Dykstra and Roger McDowell to the Phillies. This Bowman Tiffany card therefore represents the closing chapter of Samuel's original run in Philadelphia.
Samuel went on to earn his third MLB All-Star selection with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1991 and played 16 seasons in the Major Leagues. He finished with 1,578 hits, 161 home runs, 396 stolen bases, and 102 triples before later returning to the Phillies organization as a coach.
Personally signed by Juan Samuel, this 1989 Bowman Tiffany #405 combines a premium, lower-production Tiffany issue, Bowman's distinctive oversized format, and the autograph of one of the Phillies' most exciting players of the 1980s.
