The 1993 Fleer #35 Chris Hammond features the left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds, creating an interesting transitional issue from the season in which Hammond became an important member of the expansion Florida Marlins. Personally autographed by Hammond, the card captures his original Major League organization even though his career had moved to Florida by the time the 1993 season began.

The 1993 Fleer baseball set used a clean, straightforward design built around full-color photography and prominent player identification. Hammond's #35 represents his Cincinnati tenure and provides a nice contrast to later 1993 issues that were updated to show him with the newly established Marlins.

Hammond was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft after pitching collegiately at the University of Alabama. He developed through Cincinnati's farm system before making his Major League debut on July 16, 1990.

He remained with the Reds through the 1992 season before becoming part of Major League Baseball's expansion process. The Florida Marlins selected Hammond in the 1992 MLB Expansion Draft, making him one of the players chosen to help build the original roster for the new franchise.

The move proved to be an important opportunity for Hammond. During the Marlins' inaugural 1993 season, he became a fixture in their starting rotation, making 32 starts and finishing 15-12. His 15 victories led Florida and established a career high.

That career path gives the 1993 Fleer #35 additional historical interest. Although Hammond is pictured as a Red, the card was issued during the same year he was establishing himself as one of the most successful starting pitchers on the original Florida Marlins team.

Hammond's career later included a remarkable reinvention. After three seasons away from Major League Baseball, he returned at age 36 with the Atlanta Braves in 2002 and delivered an extraordinary season out of the bullpen, going 7-2 with a 0.95 ERA in 63 appearances while allowing only seven earned runs in 76 innings.

He continued pitching through 2006 and ultimately appeared in parts of 14 Major League seasons, giving this signed 1993 Fleer issue appeal as both a Cincinnati card and a transitional piece from a pivotal year in Hammond's career.
