The 1993 Donruss #346 Chris Hammond features the left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds, making it an interesting transitional card from the year Hammond began the next chapter of his career with the expansion Florida Marlins. Personally autographed by Hammond, the card preserves his Cincinnati identity even though he would spend the entire 1993 Major League season pitching for Florida.

The 1993 Donruss set featured a clean early-1990s design with full-color photography, white borders and the familiar Donruss branding. Hammond's #346 is particularly appealing from a player-collection standpoint because its Reds imagery reflects the organization in which he developed and reached the Major Leagues, while the card was issued during his first season with a new franchise.

Hammond was selected by Cincinnati in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft following his collegiate career at the University of Alabama. He worked his way through the Reds' system with stops that included Tampa, Chattanooga and Nashville before making his Major League debut on July 16, 1990.

He pitched for Cincinnati from 1990 through 1992. After the 1992 season, Hammond's career changed dramatically when the newly formed Florida Marlins selected him in the MLB Expansion Draft as the franchise assembled its original roster.

The move provided Hammond with his first opportunity to spend a full season in a Major League starting rotation. In the Marlins' inaugural 1993 season, he made 32 starts and went 15-12, leading the club in victories. His 15 wins also established the highest single-season total of his Major League career.

Hammond's career eventually took another remarkable turn. After being out of the Major Leagues from 1999 through 2001, he returned at age 36 with the Atlanta Braves in 2002. Working exclusively in relief, Hammond produced an extraordinary 0.95 ERA in 63 appearances, finishing 7-2 while allowing only seven earned runs in 76 innings.

That comeback helped extend Hammond's career through 2006. He ultimately appeared in parts of 14 Major League seasons, pitching for the Reds, Marlins, Red Sox, Braves, Yankees, Athletics and Padres.
