The 1992 Topps Gold #744 Chris Hammond is a premium parallel of his regular 1992 Topps card, featuring the left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds. Personally autographed by Hammond, this Gold version is an especially appealing variation from a landmark year in Topps history, when the company introduced its first widely distributed parallel set.

Topps Gold debuted in 1992, giving collectors a parallel version of the flagship set distinguished by gold-foil player names on the card fronts. The concept was significant for the hobby, helping usher in the parallel-card era that would become a major part of sports card collecting throughout the 1990s and beyond.

The Gold designation gives Hammond's #744 additional collecting appeal compared with the standard 1992 Topps version. For collectors assembling comprehensive player runs, the regular and Gold versions provide two distinctly different examples of the same flagship design.

Hammond was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft following his collegiate career at the University of Alabama. He advanced through Cincinnati's farm system before making his Major League debut on July 16, 1990.

This card dates from Hammond's final season in the Cincinnati organization. Following the 1992 campaign, the newly formed Florida Marlins selected Hammond in the MLB Expansion Draft, providing him with an opportunity to become a regular Major League starting pitcher.

Hammond took advantage of that opportunity during Florida's inaugural 1993 season, making 32 starts and finishing 15-12. His 15 victories led the expansion Marlins and remained the highest single-season total of his career.

Nearly a decade later, Hammond authored an extraordinary comeback. After spending three seasons away from the Major Leagues, he returned with the Atlanta Braves in 2002 at age 36 and became one of baseball's most effective relievers. Hammond went 7-2 with a remarkable 0.95 ERA in 63 appearances, allowing only seven earned runs over 76 innings.

Hammond ultimately pitched in parts of 14 Major League seasons, making this first-year Topps Gold parallel an attractive signed issue from the early portion of an unusually long and varied career.
