The 1992 Topps Gold Winner #744 Chris Hammond is a distinctive variation of Hammond's Topps Gold card featuring the left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds. Personally autographed by Hammond, the Gold Winner version adds another layer to the inaugural Topps Gold release and is an appealing piece for collectors building a comprehensive Hammond, Reds or 1992 Topps parallel collection.

Topps Gold debuted in 1992, introducing collectors to gold-foil parallels of the company's flagship cards. Topps also conducted a promotional contest in which collectors could obtain Gold cards through winning game pieces. Cards distributed as part of that program can be identified by the Winner designation printed on the back, creating a recognized variation from the regular Topps Gold issue.

That distinction makes the Gold Winner #744 different from both Hammond's standard 1992 Topps #744 and his regular Topps Gold #744. With three versions available from the flagship design, Hammond's 1992 Topps cards provide an excellent example of the expanding parallel and variation concepts that were beginning to reshape the hobby during the early 1990s.

Hammond was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft after pitching at the University of Alabama. He progressed through Cincinnati's minor league system before making his Major League debut in 1990.

The card dates from Hammond's final season in the Cincinnati organization. Following the 1992 season, the newly formed Florida Marlins selected him in the MLB Expansion Draft, giving Hammond the opportunity to move into a regular Major League starting rotation.

Hammond responded with one of his best seasons. During Florida's inaugural 1993 campaign, he made 32 starts and went 15-12, leading the expansion Marlins in victories and establishing his career high in wins.

His career later produced an extraordinary second act. After spending three seasons away from the Major Leagues, Hammond returned at age 36 with the Atlanta Braves in 2002 and reinvented himself as an outstanding reliever. He finished 7-2 with a remarkable 0.95 ERA in 63 appearances, allowing only seven earned runs over 76 innings.

Hammond continued pitching through 2006 and ultimately appeared in parts of 14 Major League seasons, giving this unusual Gold Winner variation added appeal as an autographed card from the early stages of his lengthy career.
