Fields was in his third season managing West Michigan in 1999. He led the Whitecaps from 1997 through 2000, overseeing one of the most successful stretches in franchise history. His first club went an extraordinary 92-39 in 1997, and the 1998 Whitecaps followed with an 83-57 record and the Midwest League championship.

The 1999 Whitecaps finished 68-72 in the Midwest League's East Division. Despite the team's record, the roster is particularly interesting in retrospect because it featured a sizable group of players who eventually reached the Major Leagues, including Brandon Inge, Eric Munson, Andrs Torres, Jason Frasor, Nate Cornejo, Shane Loux and Adam Bernero.

Fields' coaching staff that season included Tim Torricelli as hitting coach and Joe Boever as pitching coach. West Michigan remained the Class A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, giving Fields an important role in developing players for the organization.

Fields would rebound with another outstanding club in 2000, going 88-52 and earning his second Midwest League Manager of the Year Award. Across his four seasons managing West Michigan, Fields compiled an impressive 331-220 record, and he was later inducted into the West Michigan Whitecaps Hall of Fame.
