Fields managed the West Michigan Whitecaps, then the Class A Midwest League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, from 1997 through 2000. His 1998 club finished an impressive 83-57, captured first place and went on to win the Midwest League championship.

The Whitecaps advanced through the postseason by defeating the Clinton LumberKings and Michigan Battle Cats before beating the Rockford Cubbies three games to one in the championship series. Fields' club also allowed a league-low 511 runs during the regular season.

Fields' tenure at West Michigan was remarkably successful. Across four seasons from 1997 through 2000, his Whitecaps teams compiled a 331-220 record. He was named Midwest League Manager of the Year twice, in 1997 and 2000, and three of his four West Michigan clubs posted the league's best record. Fields was later inducted into the West Michigan Whitecaps Hall of Fame in 2010.

The 1998 club also included several players who eventually reached the Major Leagues, including Jeff Weaver, Adam Pettyjohn, Shane Loux, Matt Miller and Mike Rivera.
