His .368 batting average led the American Association and remains listed by the Nashville Sounds as the highest single-season batting average in franchise history. Fields was also selected to the 1986 American Association All-Star team.

Fields' tremendous season earned him his first opportunity in the Major Leagues. He made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers on September 3, 1986, making this Nashville Sounds card a true pre-rookie/minor league issue from the same season in which he reached the majors.
