Batista entered 1997 after an impressive rookie campaign in which he batted .298 and finished seventh in American League Rookie of the Year voting. During his second season, he appeared in 68 games for the Athletics, collecting 38 hits, 10 doubles, four home runs and 18 RBI. He served primarily as Oaklands shortstop, making 54 starts at the position while also seeing action elsewhere in the infield.

Batistas career took off after his early years in Oakland. He developed into one of baseballs more dangerous power-hitting infielders and became a two-time MLB All-Star, earning selections with Toronto in 2000 and Baltimore in 2002. His biggest power season came with the Blue Jays in 2000, when he hit a career-high 41 home runs with 114 RBI.
