Batista entered 1997 as the Athletics Opening Day shortstop after an impressive rookie campaign the previous season. He appeared in 68 games for Oakland, collecting 38 hits, 10 doubles, four home runs and 18 RBI. Batista made 54 starts at shortstop while also seeing limited action at second and third base.
Batista also spent part of the season with Triple-A Edmonton, where he batted .315 in 33 games. He returned to Edmonton for the final game of the Pacific Coast League playoffs and went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Trappers captured the championship.
Batista would soon develop into one of baseballs notable power-hitting infielders. He became a two-time MLB All-Star and finished his Major League career with 1,146 hits, 221 home runs and 718 RBI, highlighted by a career-high 41 home runs with Toronto in 2000.
