Browning enjoyed an exceptional rookie campaign in 1985, becoming a 20-game winner in his first full Major League season. He finished 20-9 with a 3.55 ERA, making 38 starts and throwing 261.1 innings with six complete games, four shutouts and 155 strikeouts. His performance earned him a second-place finish in National League Rookie of the Year voting and sixth place in the Cy Young Award race.

Browning went on to become one of the most memorable pitchers in modern Reds history. On September 16, 1988, he threw a perfect game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, retiring all 27 batters he faced in a 1-0 Cincinnati victory. Two years later, he played an important role on the 1990 World Series champion Reds, earning the victory in Game 3 as Cincinnati completed its four-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics. He was also selected to the National League All-Star team in 1991.
