One of Gullicksons most memorable performances came during his rookie season with Montreal in 1980. On September 10, he struck out 18 Chicago Cubs, setting a Major League rookie record at the time. He finished that season 10-5 with a 3.00 ERA and placed second in National League Rookie of the Year voting.

After two seasons pitching for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan, Gullickson returned to the Major Leagues and enjoyed several more productive seasons. His finest came with Detroit in 1991, when he led the American League with 20 victories. Over a 14-season Major League career, Gullickson recorded 162 wins, 1,279 strikeouts and more than 2,500 innings pitched.
