The 1991 Fleer Ultra Update #U-76 Chris Hammond is an early-career issue featuring the young left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds. Personally autographed by Hammond, the card comes from the inaugural year of Fleer's premium Ultra brand and its Update release, giving it additional appeal beyond a standard early-1990s base card.

Fleer introduced Ultra baseball in 1991 as a more premium alternative to its traditional flagship product. The brand emphasized upgraded photography, glossy presentation and higher-end production, establishing Ultra as a fixture in the hobby throughout the 1990s. The Ultra Update set expanded upon that inaugural release with additional players and subjects.

Hammond was selected by Cincinnati in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft after pitching at the University of Alabama. He advanced through the Reds' minor league system before making his Major League debut on July 16, 1990.

Hammond made seven starts for Cincinnati during his first Major League season. His debut came during the Reds' memorable 1990 championship campaign, when Cincinnati went wire-to-wire in first place before defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League Championship Series and sweeping the Oakland Athletics in the World Series.

The 1991 Fleer Ultra Update #U-76 captures Hammond while he was still establishing himself at the Major League level. Its Update-set status and connection to the inaugural season of Fleer Ultra make it a distinctive piece within his early-career checklist.

Hammond later became a regular starting pitcher for the Florida Marlins. During Florida's inaugural 1993 season, he made 32 starts and won a career-high 15 games.

After spending several seasons away from Major League Baseball, Hammond returned with the Atlanta Braves in 2002 at age 36 and enjoyed an extraordinary resurgence as a reliever. He went 7-2 with a 0.95 ERA in 63 appearances, allowing only seven earned runs across 76 innings.

Hammond's comeback extended his career through 2006. He ultimately pitched in parts of 14 Major League seasons, appearing for seven organizations and finding success in both starting and relief roles.
