In 1984, the season preceding this Fleer release, he established career highs at the time with 15 victories, 223 strikeouts and 246 innings pitched while completing 11 of his 34 starts.
Witt concluded that 1984 season with one of the greatest pitching performances in Angels history. On September 30, 1984, he retired all 27 Texas Rangers he faced in a 1-0 victory, throwing the 11th perfect game in Major League history. Witt struck out 10 and completed the masterpiece on just 94 pitches.
His success continued as he emerged as the ace of the California staff. Witt earned American League All-Star selections in 1986 and 1987, and his 1986 season was particularly impressive: 18-10 with a 2.84 ERA, 208 strikeouts, 269 innings and 14 complete games. He helped the Angels win the AL West and came within one victory of reaching the World Series.
Witt pitched parts of 12 Major League seasons with the Angels and New York Yankees, finishing with 117 victories, 1,373 strikeouts and 72 complete games. He also combined with Mark Langston to throw a no-hitter for California in 1990, making Witt one of the relatively few pitchers associated with both a perfect game and a combined no-hitter.
