Featuring Larry Bowa as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, this Larry Bowa autographed 2004 Topps #288 MGR Philadelphia Phillies card represents another chapter in his long association with the franchise. After establishing himself as one of the finest defensive shortstops in Phillies history, Bowa returned to lead the club from the dugout.

Bowa signed with Philadelphia as an amateur free agent and made his Major League debut in 1970, finishing third in National League Rookie of the Year voting. He became a fixture at shortstop and earned five All-Star selections during his career along with two Gold Glove Awards. In 1979, he posted a .991 fielding percentage, then a Major League record for a shortstop.

Bowa was an important part of the Phillies clubs that captured three consecutive National League East titles from 1976 through 1978. He later helped Philadelphia win the 1980 World Series, batting .375 during the NLCS against Houston and .375 again in the World Series against Kansas City as the Phillies captured the first championship in franchise history.

After his playing and coaching careers brought him to several organizations, Bowa returned to Philadelphia as manager in 2001. He immediately guided the Phillies to an 86-76 record, a 21-game improvement over the previous season, and was named National League Manager of the Year. He managed Philadelphia through most of the 2004 season.

Bowa finished his playing career with 2,191 hits and 318 stolen bases and has remained closely associated with Phillies baseball through his years as a player, coach, manager and advisor. The 2004 Topps #288 Manager card is an appealing addition for Philadelphia Phillies collectors, Larry Bowa fans, 1980 World Series collections or collectors assembling comprehensive autographed player runs.
