The 1977 Topps #310 Larry Bowa is a classic vintage Philadelphia Phillies issue featuring one of the most popular and accomplished shortstops in franchise history. Personally autographed by Bowa, the card dates from the heart of a highly successful era of Phillies baseball and from one of the finest seasons of Bowa's career.
Bowa had established himself as Philadelphia's everyday shortstop soon after reaching the Major Leagues in 1970. Known for his exceptional defense, competitiveness and ability to make contact at the plate, he became a cornerstone of the Phillies clubs that emerged as perennial contenders during the second half of the 1970s.
The 1977 season was an outstanding one for Bowa and the Phillies. He batted .280 with 192 hits, 25 doubles, six triples and 32 stolen bases, while striking out only 24 times in 699 plate appearances. His 192 hits represented the highest single-season total of his Major League career.
Philadelphia enjoyed an even bigger season as a team, winning 101 games and capturing the National League East championship for the second consecutive year. The roster featured stars including Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Greg Luzinski and Garry Maddox, with Bowa providing elite defense at shortstop and speed near the top of the lineup.
Bowa's defensive excellence was a defining part of his career. He earned two Gold Glove Awards at shortstop and led National League shortstops in fielding percentage six times. He also received five All-Star selections during his 16-year Major League career.
His Phillies legacy extends well beyond his playing days. Bowa was the starting shortstop on the 1980 World Series Championship team, later managed the Phillies from 2001 through 2004, and returned to the organization in multiple coaching and advisory roles. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame in 1991.
