Add a distinctive boxed-set issue from one of Lance Parrish's finest late-career seasons with this 1990 Donruss Best of the American League #59 California Angels card, personally autographed by the eight-time Major League All-Star and 1984 World Series champion.
The 1990 Donruss Best of the American League set was a special 144-card release and represented a change from Donruss' Baseball's Best sets of the previous two years. For 1990, Donruss divided the concept into separate Best of the American League and Best of the National League boxed sets.
The cards closely resemble the regular 1990 Donruss release but are easily distinguished by their blue borders instead of the familiar red borders. The backs are different as well, providing complete Major and Minor League statistics rather than limiting the statistical record to the previous five Major League seasons.
That makes Parrish's #59 an excellent companion to his regular 1990 Donruss #213. The two cards feature the same accomplished California Angels catcher but come from distinctly different Donruss products.
The American League set has a particularly strong checklist. Ken Griffey Jr. leads off the set as card #1, and the 144-card release contains 18 Hall of Famers. Other prominent players include Carlton Fisk, Alan Trammell and many of the American League's leading stars of the period.
The timing of this Parrish card is especially good. His 1990 season with California was one of the best performances of the latter portion of his career. At age 34, Parrish batted .268 with 126 hits, 24 home runs and 70 RBI in 133 games, producing a .338 on-base percentage, .451 slugging percentage and 123 OPS+.
That performance earned Parrish selection to the 1990 American League All-Star team and the American League Silver Slugger Award at catcher. It was his eighth and final career All-Star selection and his sixth Silver Slugger Award.
Parrish ultimately completed a 19-year Major League career with 1,782 hits, 324 home runs and 1,070 RBI. His rsum includes eight All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves, six Silver Slugger Awards and the 1984 World Series championship as a member of the Detroit Tigers.
