Add an especially interesting team-change card from Upper Deck's landmark inaugural baseball release with this 1989 Upper Deck #775 Lance Parrish, featuring him with the California Angels and personally autographed by the eight-time Major League All-Star and 1984 World Series champion.
This card makes a terrific companion to Parrish's 1989 Upper Deck #240 Philadelphia Phillies card. Upper Deck's original lower-numbered card still showed Parrish with Philadelphia, but #775 updated him to the California Angels, documenting his move between the two clubs within Upper Deck's very first baseball set.
That distinction makes #775 more than simply another Parrish card from 1989. It captures his transition into the third major chapter of his career after ten seasons with Detroit and two with Philadelphia. Parrish joined California for the 1989 season and immediately became the Angels' primary catcher.
The move worked well for both Parrish and the Angels. In his first California season, he appeared in 124 games and collected 103 hits, 12 doubles, 17 home runs and 50 RBI. He handled an enormous workload behind the plate as well, appearing in 122 games at catcher and making 118 starts.
California finished 91-71 in 1989, with Parrish joining a talented club featuring Wally Joyner, Chili Davis, Devon White, Brian Downing and Johnny Ray. The Angels remained in contention throughout the season before finishing third in a tightly contested American League West.
Parrish's move to California also produced one last peak in his already accomplished career. In 1990, he batted .268 with 24 home runs and 70 RBI and was selected to the American League All-Star team while winning another Silver Slugger Award.
For a comprehensive autograph collection, the #240 Phillies and #775 Angels cards are an excellent pair. They show how Upper Deck updated Parrish's team affiliation during its historic inaugural season and document both sides of his Philadelphia-to-California transition.
