Add an important first-year California Angels update issue to a Lance Parrish autograph collection with this 1989 Score Rookie & Traded #36T, personally autographed by the eight-time Major League All-Star and 1984 World Series champion.
The 1989 Score Rookie & Traded #36T documents Parrish's move from the Philadelphia Phillies to the California Angels. His regular 1989 Score #95 still pictured him with Philadelphia, while the Rookie & Traded release updated collectors with Parrish in his new Angels uniform. The checklist confirms Lance Parrish #36T California Angels, positioned between Julio Franco #35T and Nick Esasky #37T.
The 1989 Score Rookie & Traded set contains 110 standard-size cards and was available exclusively as a factory set through hobby dealers. The first 80 cards feature players who had changed teams, while cards #81T-110T concentrate on rookies. Each factory set was packaged in a blue box and also contained ten of Score's Magic Motion trivia cards.
That checklist makes the set considerably more interesting than a typical late-1980s update release. It includes Ken Griffey Jr. #100T, along with rookie cards of players such as Joey Belle, Joe Girardi and John Wetteland, while Randy Johnson appears on a rookie-year traded card following his move from Montreal to Seattle.
For a comprehensive Parrish collection, #36T is especially worthwhile because it pairs perfectly with his regular 1989 Score #95 Phillies card. The two cards document his team change within the same Score production yearone preserving his final Philadelphia affiliation and the other introducing him as a California Angel.
Parrish immediately became the Angels' primary catcher in 1989. He appeared in 124 games, collecting 103 hits while hitting 17 home runs and driving in 50 runs. His arrival helped give California an experienced veteran behind the plate during a season in which the Angels finished 91-71.
The move proved to be productive for Parrish. He remained with California into 1992, and in 1990 he hit 24 home runs with 70 RBI, adding another strong season to a career that established him as one of the premier power-hitting catchers of his generation.
Parrish ultimately completed a 19-year Major League career with 1,782 hits, 324 home runs and 1,070 RBI, earning eight All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves and six Silver Slugger Awards. His career is highlighted by his role as the starting catcher for the 1984 World Series Champion Detroit Tigers.
