The 1992 Donruss set represented a noticeable upgrade from the company's previous flagship releases. Donruss used improved card stock, glossy color photography and a cleaner design featuring white borders with two-tone blue accents. The complete set contains 784 cards and was divided into two series, with cards #1-396 comprising Series One and #397-784 forming Series Two. Samuel's #105 is therefore a Series One issue.

The release was also an important one for Donruss because the longtime Diamond Kings concept moved out of the base set and became a separate insert set. Donruss continued its popular Elite Series inserts as well, reflecting the hobby's growing shift toward premium chase cards during the early 1990s.

Samuel's card comes from the final season of his Dodgers tenure. He had earned his third career MLB All-Star selection with Los Angeles in 1991, making this one of his later mainstream cards as a Dodger before continuing his career elsewhere.

For variation collectors, Samuel #105 is known with two copyright-line versions on the reverse: one reading 1991 LEAF, INC. with a period and another reading 1991 LEAF, INC without the final period.
