The 1991 Studio set was the inaugural release for Donruss/Leaf's Studio brand and took a dramatically different approach from the action photography that dominated baseball cards of the era. The 264-card set features posed black-and-white head-and-shoulders portraits surrounded by mauve borders, giving the cards the appearance of professional studio photographs.

The backs were equally unusual. Rather than relying primarily on traditional statistics, Studio offered an "Up Close and Personal" profile with information about each player's interests and personality. The set was also noteworthy as the first major baseball card release in decades to feature an entire checklist built around black-and-white photography.
