Juan Samuel Autographed 1983 TCMA Portland Beavers Card #2

This card predates Samuel's nationally issued Major League rookie cards and captures him while climbing through the Philadelphia Phillies farm system. Trading Card Database lists only two Samuel cards from 1983the TCMA Portland Beavers #2 and TCMA Reading Phillies #17making these his earliest cataloged cards.

Samuel began the 1983 season with Double-A Reading before advancing to the Triple-A Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League. His performance after reaching Portland was outstanding. In just 65 games, Samuel batted .330 with 86 hits, 14 doubles, eight triples, 15 home runs, 52 RBI and 33 stolen bases, producing a tremendous 1.004 OPS.

Those numbers provide an early glimpse of the unusual combination of power and speed Samuel would soon bring to Philadelphia. The following season he became the Phillies' everyday second baseman, made the 1984 National League All-Star team, and finished second in NL Rookie of the Year voting.
