Clark made an immediate impact in the middle of the Cardinals lineup in 1985, batting .281 with 22 home runs, 87 RBI and 83 walks while posting a .393 on-base percentage and .895 OPS. He earned a National League All-Star selection and Silver Slugger Award and finished 10th in NL Most Valuable Player voting.

His production helped St. Louis win 101 games and capture the National League pennant. Clark continued to produce in October, batting .381 with a home run and four RBI in the National League Championship Series before appearing in all seven games of the World Series against the Kansas City Royals.

A four-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, Clark finished his 18-season Major League career with 1,826 hits, 340 home runs, 1,180 RBI and a .379 on-base percentage. He enjoyed another tremendous season with St. Louis in 1987, hitting 35 home runs with 106 RBI and finishing third in National League MVP voting.
